Emma’s Scrappy Log Cabin – Part 2
The second part of the tutorial is to finish off the squares, making them all the same size and much easier to piece together.

Firstly cut 13/4″ strips from the fabric you would like to sash the blocks with. I have chosen a chocolate brown.
![]()
Sew the strips of brown on the block, following the log cabin pattern.

Then trim the block back to 121/2″. By sewing on sashing strips that are slightly larger than we needed gives us the opportunity to make sure all the blocks are the same size.

Then using some of the left over 11/2″ strips that we used in the log cabin and by cutting them into 11/2″ squares we can make a nice feature for the sashing. Place the square right side together with the block, on the corner and sew diagonally through the middle.

The iron the squares outwards and you will have triangles on each corner.

As you can see, when you sew the blocks together you get diamonds in the corners. I think it adds something special!

Thanks for the tutorial. I’m still to make a proper quilt, and I think that one like this could be a good place to start. It looks fantastic.

I love log cabin quilts. I’ve been planning one in my head for ages. It’s about time I actually started on it. And I think I’ll incorporate your sashing detail. Thanks.
