Scrap Bag

I have been wanting to make this quilt for quite some time now, having collected the fabric over the last year or so. I made the first block back in October, and have been struggling to find the time to finish them. I was inspired by the girls over at Melly and Me, and their lovely scrappy log cabin.

I decided to make my scrappy log cabin a 10″ finished block, and sew it on a vilene foundation.
Centres: 21/2″ squares
Strips: 11/2″ strips

I used a lightweight vilene, cut at 11″.
Drawn a diagonal line from one corner to the other with a pencil.

Place one of your 21/2″ squares in the centre of your vilene, right side up, lining up the corners and place your first 11/2″ strip on the right hand side of the centre square. Iron flat.

Continue sewing clockwise direction, trimming off the excess strip as you need. Try to sew with an accurate 1/4″ seam allowance, but if you don’t the second part of this tutorial will be for you.

When you sew the final strip on check the size of the block. It should measure 101/2″ square. If your block is a little smaller or bigger, don’t worry. Just make sure it is a square.

I have made 25 blocks, with a clever way of sashing them together the size differences shouldn’t matter. I will blog the next part of this tutorial shortly…………………….
