Spot quilt for Poppy

October 3rd, 2011

I have a new baby in my life. My very good friends have
had a little baby girl called Poppy.
I have made all their children cot quilts and am now thinking
I need to make them quilts for their beds – that is going to have
to wait as I have a baby quilt to make!!!

The beautiful Poppy

I love making cot quilts as they are a good way to test out
new quilt ideas without committing to a full quilt.
I felt like making a quilt with spots and the nursery
for Poppy has been decorated in soft creams, beiges
and pinks. I managed to get some soft florals from
some fellow crafters because I don’t have anything
like that in my stash anymore!

I decided to make the blocks 8″ square.
I then choose some circle templates,
one for the finished size – 5.5″ and one to
cut the fabric with seam allowance included – 6.5″

I then made cardboard templates out of the 5.5″ circle.
I used a light weight cardboard so it’s easier to pop
out after the fabric has been stitched.
I used a running stitch around the edge of each
circle and the placed the cardboard template
in the middle. I then drew up the thread
gathering the seam allowance on the back.
Then I gave them all a really good press,
and popped out the cardboard.
I only made 6 cardboard templates so
I could use it again and again.

I have made 35 circles and this is all I have done so far.
The quilt will be 5 squares across and 7 down,
making it 40″ x 56″ in size.
I am now going to sew the cirles onto the 8.5″
background fabrics. I think I will used a fabric
glue to hold them in place so I can sew around
the edge of each circle to attach them to the background.

Will post again once it is done!

Customer Show & Tell and more new things

September 23rd, 2011

The lovely Lucy popped in to show us her “Pickle”
“Pickle” is a pattern by the the talented Jodie from RicRac.
This pattern has been designed as an introduction to making softies,
and Lucy enjoyed making it so much she came to get more fabric to
make another one. The best bit……. Lucy is only 8!!

I got another treat today when Briony brought in her
finished Alphabet Soup Quilt.
The pattern for this quilt was designed by Kellie from Don’t Look Now.
I think she has done a pretty awesome job!

and the latest news…… we have some buttons.
They are from BasicGrey and are just stunning.

and I thought I would also share my new customer alarm.
Buffy sits up on the counter when there are no
customers in the shop just keeping an eye on things.
As soon as the door opens she bolts off out the back,
in the process scaring the hell out of me!

Buffy – “would you do some work and stop taking photos of me”
